Galen Leather - Leather Zippered Magnum Opus with 3 Slots

Recently I splurged on a Galen Leather pen case, and I’m really in love with it. So here’s a closer look at the Magnum Opus zippered pen case in the 3 slot version.

It was a sort of impulsive decision to bite the bullet and get a Galen Leather product for myself (I admit, seeing it so often on Instagram and /r/fountainpens definitely had a part in this). At the time I wanted it, Wonder Pens didn’t have any Galen Leather products in stock - and I didn’t want to wait for shipping from GL directly.

So, I knew the Vancouver Pen Shop downtown stocks the product in store. Off I went on an adventure to the store, which I hadn’t been to since they moved locations. No photos of the inside of the store, as per their sign request - though here’s a little one of the outside of the shop! They have a great selection of products, even carrying Diamine inks and a huge selection of Robert Oster. I believe they’re one of the only local stores to carry Diamine inks. Though of note, I didn’t see any Ferris Wheel Press, Dominant Industry, Hobonichi, or Midori products if you were looking for any of those.

Okay, back to the pen case. Admittedly, I went in wanting just a normal 3 pen slot zipper case, or the 6 pen slot case as I wasn’t needing anything fancy. I just want to be able to tote a few of my pens around without worrying about dinging them up (though I freely toss Kawecos in my purse). The day I went, the Pen Shop didn’t have any other 3 pen cases with zipper but the Magnum Opus zipper line from Galen Leather, which was much fancier, and more expensive than the ones I had been wanting. But, once I saw the undyed leather I was won over. It really doesn’t take much for me, lol.

The craftsmanship is exquisite - the stitching is fantastic all around, and the brand embossing is really nice. The 3 pen slot zipper Magnum opus is a really nice and slim case. It’s got an elastic on the back of the case, and some magnets inside the front of the case so it can stand at an angle on it’s own. I wasn’t sure if I needed that feature, but it’s actually really neat!

Here’s the front and back of the case, with a Lamy Safari for scale.

There’s a removable pen tray that can comfortably fit a variety of pens. I tried putting a Lamy Safari, a Sailor Pro Gear Slim, Kaweco Sport, TWSBI Eco and Rose Gold Mini, and a Benu Briolette (which is currently my chonkiest pen). All fit with no issue, and now I’m sure they’ll be safe and sound in whatever bag I put them in. For now, it’s a beautiful pen holder on my desk.
