Today is a special day - my first foray into nib grinds! Here I’ve gotten the new TWSBI Eco Creme, a recent colour from December 2023, with a fancy addition to the nib ~ previously a TWSBI Broad, I requested an architect nib with a reverse grind.

I’ve recently been interested in the architect style of typeface, and it just wasn’t working with my regular fountain pens. I tried using my Lamy cursive nib (which is similar to an architect, but in very baby steps) but it wasn’t BOLD enough for me. At first I thought of buying a pre-ground nib and replacing it myself… but the issue of which Jowo fits what pen, etc. was turning my brain to mush. Maybe it was the 2AM search that gave me a disadvantage.

Anyways. Eventually I found mention of Kirk Speer over at Penrealm (thanks to this very helpful photo this reddit user posted that compared a few architect grinds by different nibmeisters). I was really excited by the idea of buying a pen and having the nib ground all in one source! So Penrealm was the perfect experience for me.

Writing with the nib feels incredibly satisfying. Like any architect nib, the grind requires you to write at quite a specific angle. I know some say you should send photos of you writing so the nibmeister can see your natural writing angle, but I think it just kinda goes with the territory for me to have a grip style per pen. Certain pens I change my writing ‘stance’ to accommodate for a section that isn’t very comfy.

Since the nib was previously bold, this architect nib ain’t subtle. And I love it.
